What the Sepik means to me

We need to wake up the national conversation. We are asking you to share on social media, What does the Sepik mean to me?

We want to hear from you

We want to hear from you – the students, the next generations, proud Sepik people living across the nation, scientists, tourism experts, artists, galleries.

You may have a poem, a song, a photo, a memory, a drawing, something that you would like to say. Share with us and wake up the conversation.

This is a River that must be shared with the world. Let's begin to share it.

In addition to adding your voice to social media, there is a unique opportunity for your voice to be added to a special resource about the Sepik.

The resource will collect stories, poems, memories, songs, photos and statements about the importance of the Sepik River from ordinary people. This collection will be shared on social media, online and as part of the broader fight to showcase the importance of the Sepik.

Whatever your background, we want to hear about why the Sepik is important to you.

If you have a professional background, we also want to hear from you about why the Sepik is important to you, and your concerns about the risks facing the Sepik.

To be included, email your poems, songs, drawings, reflections, memories, words or photos to Tommy Esau, Pacific Outreach Specialist at Jubilee Australia at tommy@jubileeaustralia.org by 30 June 2026 with the subject ‘Sukundimi Walks’.

The Sepik is a source of life for the rainforests, forests, floodplains, wetlands and mangroves across two provinces.

It is also a region of supreme biodiversity – nominated by the Government of Papua New Guinea for World Heritage status due to it containing ‘superlative natural phenomena’ and ‘areas of exceptional natural beauty and aesthetic importance’.

The Sepik region holds 50,000 years of living culture, wildlife not found anywhere else on earth, and is home to approximately 430,000 people, whose lives are deeply intertwined with the Sepik River.

But what does the Sepik mean to you?

Parliament Haus is modelled on the architecture of the haus tambaran of the Sepik region. The culture of the Sepik is embedded throughout Papua New Guinea. Sepik art is showcased in art galleries all over the world.

But what does the Sepik mean to you?

We are asking you to share on social media, your answer to the question: What does the Sepik mean to me?

We need to wake up the national conversation.

We need to remember why the Sepik is important – and that starts with each of us recognising:

What does the Sepik mean to me?

What does it mean to our nation?
