Film: Sukundimi Walks Before Me

Produced in partnership with Project Sepik and the Save the Sepik campaign, Sukundimi Walks Before Me centres the mighty Sepik River — the lifeblood of its people — and documents Sepik communities’ resistance to the proposed gold-copper mine located near the river’s headwaters. At its heart, the film is a story of guardianship, ancestral responsibility, and collective refusal in the face of extraction.

Supreme Sukundimi Declaration

The Supreme Sukundimi Declaration calls for a complete ban on the proposed Frieda River mine. This historic declaration issued to the PNG government by Traditional Clan leaders in 2020, represents approximately 78,000 people from 25 villages along the Sepik River, saying no to this mine.

Where is the Mining Project Up To?

The next major approval step of the project will be for the Mineral Resources Authority to grant a Special Mining Lease. Documents put together by PanAust indicate that they are hoping to receive approval for the Special Mining Lease in 2026.

This is the crucial year to save the Sepik.

The Save the Sepik campaign is fighting to protect the Sepik River from the Frieda River Mine. We believe that the risk posed by the Frieda River mine is too great and could irreparably devastate the Sepik environment and the communities that live along it.
