Where is the Project Up To?
In December 2025, it was announced that Papua New Guinea’s Conservation and Environment Protection Authority (CEPA) granted approval for six environmental permits for the Frieda River project.
In March 2026, Project Sepik and Jubilee Australia Research Centre wrote to CEPA and issued a media release calling for the Environmental Permits to be published.
As at time of writing, these Environmental Permits have still not been made public.
The next major approval step of the project will be for the Mineral Resources Authority to grant a Special Mining Lease.
Documents put together by PanAust indicate that they are hoping to receive approval for the Special Mining Lease in 2026.
This is the crucial year to save the Sepik.

Show your support for the Sepik people and the Sepik River by calling for a ban on the Frieda River Mine and calling on the PNG Government to seek World Heritage Listing for the Sepik River Basin. So far, more than 1,000 people have signed.
